Kenmore Washer Start Button Not Working? Try These Fixes

Does the Start button on your Kenmore washer do nothing? This is frustrating when every other light on the panel appears normal.

Luckily, the button is not always broken. In most cases I check the Control Lock setting and door before blaming the panel.

Try each solution below before paying for a new control panel.

  • Handles a real 17.8 lb load, not just socks.
  • Hooks to a kitchen tap in minutes.
  • Keeps laundry going during a repair.

Cons:

  • Needs floor space near a sink.

Kenmore Washer Start Button Not Working: What to Check

If your Kenmore washer Start button does not work, turn off Control Lock, close the door, check the power, reset the washer, and clean the controls.

Do not open the control panel while the washer is plugged in. Leave internal testing to a technician.

Turn Off Control Lock

Look for a lit lock symbol or Control Lock on the panel. Press and hold the named lock button until the light turns off.

The button used for this can vary by model. This is one of the common reason the Start button seems dead.

Press Start the Right Way

Check the label on the button. Hold it until the cycle begins when it says Hold to Start, but give a plain Start button one firm press.

Use a dry finger and press the center of the button. These check is easy to miss on a new washer.

Close the Door or Lid

Move clothes away from the edge, clean around the latch, and close the door gently. The washer will not start if the lock cannot close.

If your Kenmore washer is also showing a lock problem, read how to fix a locked Kenmore washer door. A broken latch may needs replacement.

Check Power and Reset the Washer

Check that the plug has not worked loose and reset the breaker if needed. Then disconnect the washer for five minutes before reconnecting it.

See our guide if you need help to reset your Kenmore washer. If it still does not start, inspect the outside of the panel for moisture.

Checking washer power

Clean the Panel and Get It Checked

Turn off the power and wipe moisture or detergent from the panel with a soft, dry cloth. Let it dry fully before trying again.

If every other button works but Start does not, the button or control may be faulty. There is few safe repairs inside the panel, so ask a technician to test it.

Conclusion

Try these five fixes when your Kenmore washer Start button does not work:

  • Turn off Control Lock
  • Press Start the right way
  • Close the door or lid
  • Check power and reset the washer
  • Clean the panel and get it checked

In most cases, the lock setting or door is the cause.
